Gary Siders Sr.’s case was dismissed after a court determined he was not competent to stand trial, according to court records. The decision removes him from the current criminal proceedings, but charges against three other adults remain a separate matter.

The case began after investigators found the children inside the Ohio residence during a search conducted by the Vinton County Sheriff’s Office and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

Authorities said the officers were initially investigating an unrelated matter when they came across the children and uncovered the conditions inside the property.

The discovery prompted alarm among state officials. Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson warned that waiting another day to intervene could have led to fatal consequences for some of the children.

Wilson said the situation was so serious that a delay of just 24 hours might have cost some of them their lives.

Siders Sr. was one of four adults charged in connection with the case. Gary Siders Jr., Elizabeth Siders and Christina Siders were indicted by a grand jury in August.

According to the indictments, Elizabeth Siders and Christina Siders each face 19 charges, while Gary Siders Jr. was indicted on 16 counts.

The cases against the other three defendants remain ongoing, separate from the dismissed case against Siders Sr. The charges are allegations, and the indictments do not establish guilt.

Children Needed Urgent Medical Attention

The 16 children ranged in age from 1 to 18, and authorities said every child required a medical evaluation after being found at the residence.

Wilson reported that several children were in serious condition. Two were transported by air to hospitals because of the severity of their medical needs.

Pike, 50, was set to face execution Sept. 30 at Nashville’s Riverbend Maximum Security Institution for the 1995 killing of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer. The incident unfolded shortly after 5 a.m. in the city’s Sunset District. The veteran, who has not been identified because he said he is concerned about his safety, told authorities that someone had broken into his home by drilling through a wooden door on the first floor.

When he reached the second floor, the veteran said he came across a man dressed in black who was wearing a hooded sweatshirt and face covering. The man also allegedly had a large dog with him, described by the homeowner as resembling a 60-pound husky.

The situation quickly became physical.

The veteran said the suspected burglar grabbed him, causing him to fall onto his hands and knees. He said he felt threatened and fired one round from his handgun.

The homeowner later said he believed the bullet struck the man in the buttocks.

The suspect then allegedly fled from the residence. Blood-stained footprints outside the home appeared to lead in the direction of Golden Gate Park, while the dog was left behind.

A neighbor’s surveillance footage reportedly captured the animal barking repeatedly after the man fled. The veteran said he believed animal control officials eventually took custody of the dog.

Police later reported that officers detained an injured man approximately three miles from the home, near Geary Boulevard and 47th Avenue in the Outer Richmond neighborhood.

The man was transported by ambulance to San Francisco General Hospital for treatment. Authorities said his injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Authorities had not immediately confirmed whether the hospitalized man was the individual suspected of entering the veteran’s home.

The homeowner sustained minor scrapes on his hands and knees during the confrontation. Despite the frightening encounter, he said he was thankful that he avoided more serious injuries.

A neighbor identified as Michael, who declined to provide his last name, praised the veteran and described him as someone with a courageous side.

The incident also comes as San Francisco police report that burglaries have declined by 22% compared with the same period a year earlier. Residents nevertheless said the reported break-in demonstrates that crime remains a concern in the Sunset District.

Police said that if investigators establish that the injured man at the hospital was the suspected burglar, he could be taken into custody and potentially face burglary and other charges.

Briggs Maxwell, a student at Ithaca High School and member of the Ithaca/Weston football team, died after suffering a serious head injury in an incident involving a skid loader, according to school and law enforcement officials.

The Richland County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were dispatched shortly after 7 a.m. following a 911 report about the accident. First responders and emergency medical crews arrived at the scene and found the boy with a significant head injury.

Maxwell was rushed to a hospital as medical personnel worked to save his life. Despite those efforts, the teenager later died from the injuries he sustained in the accident, authorities said.

The news sent shock waves through the Ithaca School District, where Maxwell was a young member of the student body and a developing athlete.

Daniell Rider of Killeen, Texas, shared a post on Hobby Lobby’s Facebook page which included a photo of glass vases housing stalks of cotton. The store is selling the cotton vases as a decoration.

“This decor is WRONG on SO many levels,” Rider wrote in her post. “There is nothing decorative about raw cotton… A commodity which was gained at the expense of African-American slaves. A little sensitivity goes a long way. PLEASE REMOVE THIS ‘decor.'”

The post quickly went viral. In less than a week, more than 210,000 people commented and nearly 20,000 shared it.

A number of viewers criticized Rider for the post, arguing that cotton itself is not offensive.

The post comes following another controversial incident in which the president of Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee, reportedly used cotton stalks as a centerpiece at a dinner for African-American students at his home. Several students complained about the centerpiece being offensive.

Lipscomb President Randy Lowry apologized for the decoration following the incident, saying that he could have approached the situation “with more sensitivity.”

“I sincerely apologize for the discomfort, anger or disappointment we caused and solicit your forgiveness,” Lowry said.

Two Florida boys are facing multiple charges after authorities say they caused at least $50,000 worth of damage inside an elementary school library — and their own mothers eventually brought them to the attention of investigators.

Volusia County sheriff’s deputies responded to Friendship Elementary School in Deltona after a fire alarm was triggered, according to authorities.

What deputies discovered inside the school’s library was extensive damage. Furniture had been broken apart, books were scattered throughout the room and a glass door had been smashed.

The sheriff’s office later released body-camera footage showing the condition of the library, along with images of the two boys believed to be responsible. Investigators initially appealed to the public for help identifying the suspects.

The case took a turn after the footage was circulated publicly.

Authorities said the mothers of both suspects contacted law enforcement and turned their sons in. The boys, ages 12 and 13, were subsequently questioned by investigators.

According to the sheriff’s office, both juveniles admitted to being involved in the incident. Investigators estimated the property damage at no less than $50,000.

Authorities also alleged that the boys entered the school during the day and later returned after dark. Investigators said the second visit was not simply to check on the aftermath but involved additional damage.

The two juveniles now face several charges connected to the alleged break-in and destruction.

Each boy was charged with two counts of burglary, two counts of trespassing on school property, criminal mischief and theft, according to investigators.

Goldsboro police have launched an investigation into a shooting that left a home intruder dead in the street and a 73-year-old grandmother shot in the leg.

Officers responded to calls about a shooting near 402 S. William Street. At the home, officers found the woman with an apparent gunshot wound. Shortly after the 1 a.m. response, a man was found at the intersection of William Street and Elm Street with an apparent gunshot wound.

They were both transported to Wayne UNC Health Care where the man, 19-year-old Khalil Herring, died from his injuries.

According to reports, two masked intruders demanded money after forcing their way into the home. They shot the woman in the leg, prompting the woman’s 12-year-old grandson to shoot at the intruders in self-defense.

Evidence pointed to Herring as one of the masked intruders who was shot during the burglary attempt.

Randolph Bunn, the woman’s son and the boy’s great-uncle, said: “They came in the house, I open the door, I open it, and they came in there… One guy had a gun. They just put me down on the ground… The [73-year-old woman] was in the kitchen, I don’t know why they shot her.”

Goldsboro police stated that no charges were expected against the 12-year-old, but the investigation is ongoing.

“[The intruder] just shot his grandma… He would have shot him too, he would’ve shot me too, he would’ve killed us all,” Bunn added.

The concerts will mark her return to the stage as anticipation builds around the new material.

With a new album, new stage dates and what appears to be a streamlined public identity, Cyrus is giving fans plenty to watch as “Miley” steps into her next era.

Nozell said Parton remained deeply committed to her projects until the very end, continuing to develop ideas she hoped would bring joy to her fans.

Even as her health declined, Parton had several major projects moving forward.

One of them was the SongTeller Hotel in downtown Nashville, a highly anticipated project scheduled to welcome guests beginning Sept. 14. The property is also expected to house the Life of Many Colours Museum, an attraction dedicated to telling the story of Parton’s extraordinary life and career.

Her ambitions extended well beyond the hotel.

Parton was also developing a Broadway production titled DOLLY: A True Original Musical, with the show scheduled to begin performances Dec. 7.

According to Nozell, Parton had spent years assembling a team and mapping out plans designed to continue her creative vision long after her death.

The manager said numerous projects remained at different stages of development and stressed that fans could continue seeing new material connected to Parton’s name.

That could include music that has not yet been released, books, products, experiences and future campaigns. Nozell said official projects released through Parton’s channels would reflect work she had personally approved or helped shape.

Parton died Aug. 25 at age 80 following a short battle with cancer. Her family rushed to be with her after her condition unexpectedly worsened at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center. The specific type of cancer she was battling was not publicly disclosed.

Officers initially encountered Ellerd because of outstanding warrants. But when they saw his severely deteriorated physical condition, the situation quickly became a medical emergency rather than a trip to jail.

Ellerd was rushed to a hospital, where doctors fought to stabilize him and save his hand. He had developed a serious infection connected to intravenous heroin use, adding another potentially life-threatening problem to years of addiction and homelessness.

For Ellerd, that hospital stay became the beginning of a remarkable recovery.

His struggle with addiction had stretched across many years. Hope Is Alive says he spent about 15 years in active addiction, while other accounts have described his substance abuse as lasting closer to two decades. During that period, he experienced homelessness and multiple overdoses, living in abandoned homes, tents and other unstable conditions.

His family watched helplessly as his circumstances worsened.

At one point, Ellerd’s father reportedly recognized his own son among people holding signs on Oklahoma City streets. Ellerd later recalled feeling trapped in a life where he could not see a path forward.

Then came the encounter beneath the overpass.

After receiving hospital treatment, Ellerd entered a structured recovery program through Hope Is Alive. He reportedly arrived with little more than a Walmart bag containing clothes, but he was beginning a journey that would eventually take him far beyond simply surviving.

Recovery brought structure, accountability and a support system. As Ellerd rebuilt his own life, he also became increasingly determined to help others struggling with addiction and homelessness.

He eventually worked as a Shelter Advocate for City Care, assisting people experiencing homelessness. He also volunteered with Hope Is Alive Ministries and supported men working through recovery.

At the same time, Ellerd returned to school.

He enrolled at Oklahoma State University-Oklahoma City, studying Computer Information Systems while balancing employment, service work and recovery responsibilities. In 2023, he was chosen for Cohort 4 of the school’s Center for Social Innovation.

His schedule was demanding. Accounts from the program described him as working part time, managing a recovery home and attending college full time.

Yet Ellerd continued to excel.

He maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA and became involved in several campus organizations, including the President’s Leadership Class, Things That Matter Club and Phi Theta Kappa.

The university later honored him as a 2025 Women for OSU Scholar, recognizing his academic success, leadership and community involvement.

His college journey ultimately resulted in two associate degrees: an Associate in Applied Science in Computer Information Systems and an Associate in Science in Enterprise Development.

But the achievement meant more than diplomas.

Ellerd had transformed the experiences that once threatened to destroy his life into motivation to help people still caught in similar circumstances.

He also documented his journey in a book titled Recovery Is Possible: The Story of My Journey Through Addiction and Into Recovery. Later, he launched an effort to provide 1,000 free copies to homeless individuals and people battling addiction who could not afford the book.

Ellerd’s story now stands as a striking example of how dramatically a person’s circumstances can change.

The man once found dangerously underweight beneath an Oklahoma City overpass went on to reclaim his health, pursue higher education, earn two degrees with a flawless GPA and dedicate himself to helping others.

What once looked like the end of his story instead became the beginning of an entirely different life.

The dispute centers on 2nd Base Espresso, a bikini barista stand in Spokane’s Hillyard neighborhood. A message posted outside the business made a derogatory statement about transgender women and used an offensive slur targeting people with intellectual disabilities.

Images of the sign quickly spread across social media, drawing strong criticism from members of the local community. The controversy also spilled onto review platforms, where the business faced a surge of negative responses.

Yelp temporarily stopped allowing new reviews on the establishment’s page as activity surged following coverage of the controversy. The business also saw its Google rating decline as users expressed their anger over the message.

By Wednesday, July 15, the disputed sign had reportedly been removed. It was replaced with another provocative message containing profanity, continuing a pattern that has previously attracted criticism.

The coffee stand has faced controversy over its signage before. In 2017, another sign associated with the business was widely criticized for what opponents described as a racist message.

Photos posted on Yelp also appeared to show additional signs at the business making jokes involving gay people, transgender women and immigration enforcement, including references to ICE deportations.

The latest controversy eventually moved from social media to the streets.

Hillyard resident Elbe Seaton organized a protest outside the coffee stand on Sunday, July 19. Seaton, who is openly queer and has a child with special needs, said the message hit particularly close to home.

For Seaton, the issue was about more than one sign. She argued that the message did not reflect the character of the surrounding neighborhood or the broader Spokane community.

The demonstration was also intended to send a different message to people who may have felt targeted by the sign. Organizers wanted LGBTQ+ residents and others affected by the controversy to know that they had support within the community.

The backlash also drew attention from local government.

Spokane City Councilwoman Sarah Dixit said residents had reached out to her about the situation and expressed her own opposition to the message.

Dixit acknowledged that the city does not have the authority to control speech displayed on signs belonging to private businesses. However, she made clear that she did not want the controversy to define the Hillyard district or become representative of the community.

For residents who organized the demonstration, however, the focus was not simply on removing an offensive message. They wanted to make clear that the community itself could respond when residents believe public-facing businesses cross a line.

Kieran L. Ansley, 43, was charged with four counts of child abuse after the 4-month-old girl was found injured at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids.

The infant’s mother reportedly discovered something was wrong when she returned to the hospital during the early morning hours in April. Medical testing, including a skeletal survey, later identified several fractures involving the baby’s legs, along with bruises across multiple areas of her body.

Court documents state that medical professionals ultimately diagnosed the injuries as consistent with pediatric physical abuse.

The baby had reportedly been born in November 2025 at just 23 weeks, weighing approximately 1 pound, 1 ounce. Her family said she had made significant progress during her time in the neonatal intensive care unit and was preparing to leave the hospital.

Her grandfather, Robert Steavens, said the family was devastated by what happened shortly before the infant was expected to return home.

According to court records, the baby’s mother left the NICU on the evening of April 2 and returned around 6:30 a.m. the next day.

As she approached her daughter’s room, investigators allege Ansley got up and moved toward the entrance before telling the family that the baby had slept through the night.

The mother then noticed that her daughter’s tongue appeared unusually dark and that the infant had bruises that had not been present when she left hours earlier.

Records say Ansley told her the discoloration was something he had encountered before and did not consider it serious.

The family alerted hospital personnel, prompting an investigation into what had happened during the overnight shift.

Workers who had cared for the infant during earlier shifts reportedly said they had not observed signs of trauma. Investigators also documented descriptions of Ansley as appearing frustrated, overwhelmed or flustered during the shift.

Hospital records reportedly showed 32 entries into the infant’s room that night. Investigators determined that Ansley accounted for 27 of those entries, while other nurses made the remaining visits.

Ansley faces two felony counts of second-degree child abuse, each carrying a potential maximum sentence of 10 years, as well as two misdemeanor counts of fourth-degree child abuse.

He remains out of custody on bond and has been ordered to wear an electronic tether A court hearing has been set for November.

His attorney, Damian Nunzio, said Ansley has cooperated with investigators and maintained that a thorough review of the evidence would be important to establishing what occurred.

Hospital officials confirmed that Ansley is no longer employed by the organization and said they were cooperating with law enforcement. The hospital also emphasized that patient safety remains a priority.

Meanwhile, the baby has made progress since leaving the hospital. Steavens said his granddaughter, now 10 months old, is home in Caledonia and doing well.

The criminal case remains pending, and the allegations against Ansley have not been proven in court.

Her attorneys have argued that Pike’s history of severe childhood abuse and documented post-traumatic stress disorder should be considered as part of her clemency request. A recent petition filed with Gov. Bill Lee asks that her death sentence instead be changed to life imprisonment without parole.

Pike was sentenced to death for the 1995 killing of Colleen Slemmer, an 18-year-old fello Job Corps student in Knoxville. Pike was 18 at the time of the crime.

Dressed in orange jail clothing, Siders appeared before a judge at the Vinton County Courthouse while holding her stomach. She entered not-guilty pleas to two counts of sexual battery and two counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor.

According to authorities, Siders and her husband, Gary Siders Jr., 36, allegedly engaged in sexual conduct involving the minor between January and September 2022. The Ohio Attorney General’s Office said the alleged victim was more than a decade younger than the couple at the time.

Prosecutors requested a $250,000 bond for Siders during Wednesday’s proceeding, although the judge had not yet determined whether to impose that amount. She remains jailed on a separate $300,000 bond tied to the child endangerment allegations.

Gary Jr. was previously ordered to post an additional $250,000 bond after pleading not guilty to the same four sex-related charges, bringing his total bond amount to $550,000.

The allegations emerged as investigators continued a much broader probe into the Siders family and conditions reportedly found at their rural property in Hamden.

The investigation began in December 2025 after authorities received allegations involving the sexual abuse of two children. That inquiry resulted in criminal charges against Josh Saunders, 23, and Brandon Henderson Sr., 40.

Authorities later launched another investigation in March involving allegations concerning a different minor. That probe ultimately brought investigators to Gary Jr. and Elizabeth.

On June 30, law enforcement officers searched the couple’s home as part of the investigation. During the search, authorities allegedly discovered their 16 children living in what investigators described as severely inadequate conditions.

The children reportedly ranged in age from 18 months to 18 years. Investigators alleged that many had spent significant periods confined to a small room contaminated with human waste, while some reportedly had difficulty communicating. Several children were taken to hospitals after being removed from the property.

Vinton County Sheriff Ryan Cain previously characterized the conditions as among the most disturbing his department had encountered.

This time, however, a photograph meant to capture a moment inside the presidential helicopter has become the latest spark for an entirely different conversation — with social media once again turning its attention to Trump’s appearance.

Demarcus Collier, 27, was arrested and charged with seven counts of aggravated assault along with vandalism following the Saturday incident. The charges are not based on the shooting of the alleged burglar, but on bullets that investigators say traveled beyond Collier’s property and damaged nearby homes and vehicles.

Police were called to the Shelter Cove area shortly before 5 a.m. after reports of gunfire. Police discovered a person who had been shot in the chest. The injured individual was taken to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in critical condition, according to the arrest affidavit.

Investigators say Collier was inside his home when security cameras alerted him to activity around his 2018 Jeep Wrangler, which was parked in his driveway.

Collier told authorities that he went outside with a firearm and confronted the suspected burglar. According to the police account, Collier said the individual appeared to gesture as though he had a weapon before ordering him to get back inside.

Collier said he feared for his life and fired multiple rounds. The suspected burglar and an occupied red vehicle then left the area, according to investigators.

The shooting, however, allegedly sent bullets beyond the immediate confrontation.

A nearby Dodge Charger was hit twice, while another round struck a house across the street. That bullet reportedly went through an exterior wall and entered a bedroom while several children were sleeping inside. Fortunately, nobody inside the home suffered any injuries.

Collier’s family has questioned why he is facing such serious charges.

His great-uncle described him as a hardworking family man and said he believes Collier reacted as someone would when confronted outside his own home.

A criminal defense attorney who reviewed the case also questioned the decision to file seven aggravated assault counts. He pointed to Tennessee’s Castle Doctrine and said its protections can extend to areas immediately surrounding a residence, including a driveway or yard.

However, that does not automatically settle the question of whether Collier’s use of deadly force was legally justified.

The attorney also argued that prosecutors could face challenges proving every element of aggravated assault when some of the people whose property was struck may not have known they were in danger at the time.

He suggested that a reckless-endangerment charge could potentially fit the circumstances more closely, depending on the evidence ultimately presented in court.

Tennessee recently changed portions of its property-defense laws, with the latest provisions taking effect July 1. Even with those changes, the use of a firearm in a residential neighborhood can raise separate legal questions when shots travel toward occupied homes.

The case will now turn on the evidence, including what happened during the confrontation, where each shot traveled and whether Collier’s actions met the state’s legal requirements for self-defense.

Noah Woods disappeared Tuesday afternoon after visiting a playground in Brantham, a village near Manningtree on the Suffolk-Essex border. Police said the toddler was last seen around 3 p.m. in the Merriam Close area after becoming separated from a relative.

Authorities later recovered the body of a child from Decoy Pond in Brantham. Formal identification had not yet been completed at the time of the announcement, but Noah’s family had been notified of the discovery.

Suffolk police said the circumstances surrounding the death were being treated as unexplained but not suspicious. The coroner was also being notified as investigators worked to establish exactly what happened.

The discovery came after an enormous search involving emergency crews, specialist officers and members of the public.

More than 1,300 people reportedly joined the effort to locate Noah, with volunteers searching alongside Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service, HM Coastguard and Suffolk Lowland Search and Rescue. Police search teams, dogs, helicopters and other specialist resources were also deployed.

Investigators examined CCTV and other video footage, conducted door-to-door inquiries and used aerial and thermal-imaging searches as they worked to retrace the boy’s movements.

Earlier in the operation, authorities said Noah was autistic, non-verbal and had partial hearing loss. Police had warned that he might not respond if someone called his name. Investigators said he had reportedly run down an alley near the playground toward a nearby residential area.

Decoy Pond was cordoned off as search teams concentrated on the location.

The scale of the volunteer response was especially striking. Hundreds of people turned out wearing high-visibility clothing and boots, gathering at the village hall and Brantham Leisure Centre before spreading through the surrounding area.
