The Center for Effective Discipline (CED) is a non-profit organization which provides educational information to the public on the effects of corporal punishment of children and alternatives to its use. It is currently the headquarters for and coordinates both National Coalition to Abolish Corporal Punishment in Schools (NCACPS) and End Physical Punishment of Children (EPOCH-USA). National Coalition to Abolish Corporal Punishment in Schools (NCACPS) is comprised of individuals who share information on the progress of banning corporal punishment with the public and the media. In 1996, the Center became the headquarters for End Physical Punishment of Children (EPOCH-USA) which is a supporter of the Global Initiative to End All Corporal Punishment of Children. EPOCH-USA seeks to end corporal punishment of children in all settings including homes through education and legal reform.

Is Spanking an Acceptable Form of Discipline?

You have probably heard the expression, "Spare the rod, spoil the child." Do you agree with it? Perhaps you were spanked as a kid. Was it appropriate? Some people see spanking as an outdated method of punishment or even child abuse, while others view a swat on the bottom as a parent's prerogative. Where do we draw the line when it comes to disciplining our children?

Corporal Punishment is Violence, Not Rhetoric

John Rosemond says that calling corporal punishment violence is “rhetoric.” You cannot strike your spouse, your neighbor, or even your neighbor’s dog. That’s not “rhetoric.” That is considered violence AND illegal. John Rosemond...

John Rosemond says that most parents don’t accomplish anything by spanking . They spank the same children over and over. That means it is generally ineffective, even in his view. He would have to agree that many parents spank in anger and...

Rosemond claims that the problem is not spanking per se, but “the stupid way in which many parents administer spankings.” That statement is demeaning of parents who are likely to be frustrated by children’s misbehavior and who are only...
