11Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer Forbids Working from Home in Leaked Memo

A debate has been sparked after Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer sent out a memo telling employees they must all show up to the office every day starting June.

The memo was leaked by human resources head Jackie Reses and hundreds of angered Yahoo employees.

“To become the absolute best place to work, communication and collaboration will be important, so we need to be working side-by-side,” the memo said. “That is why it is critical that we are all present in our offices.”

This has many employees upset, as it means some will have to either relocate or resign if they live far from a Yahoo office.

It is one of the first steps Mayer is making to “turn around” Yahoo. Her goal is to make the company devote itself to personalizing the web for users. Mayer believes working from home is detrimental to her goals for the company.

She wants the company to move quickly and focus on team collaboration and communication. Working remotely may hinder the company’s ability to achieve these goals.

It’s not clear how many employees will have to relocate or resign once Yahoo implements the new rules, as the company would not comment on the matter.

Even those who telecommute occasionally will not be able to do so anymore.

“For the rest of us who occasionally have to stay home for the cable guy, please use your best judgment in the spirit of collaboration,” the memo said.

While many of Yahoo’s 11,500 employees are likely weighing the pros and cons of such a demand, it’s causing many non-Yahoos to ponder the benefits of working from home.

Her ex-employer, Google, thinks working remotely hinders productivity.

Mayer has faced much criticism since taking the job. People are particularly critical of her ability to judge her family life and work life, as she recently gave birth to a baby.

She took the job as CEO while pregnant, and gave birth to baby Macallister on September 30. In just two weeks, she was back to work.
