Conservative author Ann Coulter bemoaned the state of US immigration in an opinion piece this week, calling for more whites to immigrate to the United States, and a curb on Hispanic immigration.
The comments were published on the right-wing WND web site, formerly known as WorldNetDaily, in an article called “When Did We Vote to Become Mexico?”
Coulter wants more immigrants from the United Kingdom, which she characterizes as the “mother country” of the United States, and fewer from Latin America.
“For decades, Mexicans have been about 30 percent of all legal immigrants to the United States, while only a smidgen more than 1 percent come from Great Britain,” Coulter wrote. “Is that fair? Granted, their food is better, but why is it the norm is to have nearly 30 times as many Mexican as British immigrants?
“We have been taking in more immigrants from Guatemala, the Dominican Republic and Colombia, individually, than from England, our mother country. There are nearly twice as many immigrants from El Salvador as from Canada, and 10 times as many as from Australia.
“Why can’t the country be more or less the ethnic composition it always was?”
Coulter characterized the current accusations of scandal aimed at the White House as a distraction, to call attention away from immigration reform.
Coulter wrote that “innumerable studies have shown that Mexican first-generation immigrants work like maniacs – and then the second, third and fourth generations plunge headlong into the underclass.” As the Huffington Post points out, studies actually show that each generation of Latinos tends to do better economically than the one that preceded it.
The 51-year-old Coulter prides herself on her controversial comments. After the 9/11 terror attacks, she called for “carpet-bombing” of Muslim countries and ethnic profiling of Americans believed to be Muslim; and has stated that women should not be allowed to vote.
