Should Arkansas Pass the Unmarried Couple Adoption Ban?

More than 100,000 children are adopted each year in the United States, but it’s never easy trying to determine a child’s best interests. Currently the state of Arkansas is preparing to vote on an initiative that, if passed, would make it illegal for unmarried couples to adopt. No one would dispute that children ought to be cared for, but the question remains, what makes a good home for a child? (Editor's Note: On November 4th, Arkansas voters passed Act 1 to ban adoption for unmarried couples.)

I think there are the most advantages for the child who grows up in a home with a married mother and father, so this arrangment should be given priority.

As a child ages, he or she becomes less likey to be adopted. Around age 5-6 other couples need to be considered so this child does not grow up as a ward of the state.

Most states make sure the child they give away grows up in a good home, so I don't see the problem with allowing alternative or unmarried couples raise the child, or even a single relative.

If people can't make a simple mature decision to get married , how can you trust them with the responsiblity of raising an adopted child ?

Pretty simple concept, really...

Personally, I'm waiting for the Roe Effect to kick in and eliminate the mental disorder known as liberalism...

This can't be a serious question!

And had to deal with a father that was just short of abusive and a poor mother who was afraid to speak an opinion. So how can this be better than being raised by one person that loves you and cares for your needs. Its a stupid argument.

In the end, every child needs to relate with every adult as an individual- even Mom ------ and Dad.
Approved adoptive parents get far more screening than natural parents
and more than 50% of marriages break down in any event.
If it was my bailliwick, I'd refuse adoption to couples who thought they could "parent" in lock step.
As an adoptive parent, it is critical for my daughter to understand that her parents are individuals who may think differently on a lot of issues, but, who both care about her and will look after her.
The same applies whether we were married, unmarried or single parents.

While I am an advocate of the traditional family with a father and stay at home mother, married and stable, I also know many such families who are abusive, violent, and unstable. It is not practical to limit a child's options.

A loving Aunt who is unmarried may be the best possible mother for a child in need of a home. A gentleman who has lived with his girlfriend for more than ten years may offer a more stable and loving environment than a newly married couple with limited resources.

There are too many children out there in the foster care system who are bumped from home to home, with no anchor, no support. Do not cut off caring people who might offer them a peaceful home. Leave all options open to them.

I would prefer a child to be with an unmarried couple then to get stuck in the foster care system.
