On December 27, Israel began bombing the Gaza strip in response to continued rocket fire from Hamas militants, ending a six-month truce. Since that time, more than 1,000 Palestinians have been killed, including many civilians. Israel announced a temporary cease fire on Jan. 17 -- but so far U.S. response has been minimal.
