Can Autism be Cured or Managed?

Can Autism be Cured or Managed?

“Your child is autistic.” No parent wants to hear those words. But if they do, treating their child’s autism becomes paramount. Some parents, including advocate and actress Jenny McCarthy, claim to have cured their children’s autism through natural methods. But others insist we should be more focused on managing the disorder than pursuing something elusive. When it comes to autism, what’s the real diagnosis?

    Manageable, Not Curable

Unfortunately that's one of those things that you're genetically pre-disposed to. However, we can minimize the effects of autism by removing mercury-based preservatives from vaccines that have been shown to exacerbate autism, as well as adopting a gluten-free diet (which helps dramatically as well).

You can't cure genetic diseases, unless you use gene therapy which is just way too risky for something that can be easily managed.

    Recovering!!!!!!!!!!!

My child is recovering from autism . Diet, supplements, therapy and yes chelation! He is not cured but recovering. We have been doing biomed since 04/2008. The day I walked into the DAN! (defeat autism now) was the one of the best days of our life. I hope that every child with autism has the opportunity to heal as my son has. Until mainstream medicine looks at the diets and supplements as a treatment option many children will contine to suffer.

    Biomedical Treatment is Woeful

The biomedical treatment that the medical community has to offer is woefully inadequate. I do not wonder that parents seek help from other venues.

When the medical community does something constructive for the autism community, then maybe there will be autistics who move from the managed column to the cured column.

    Behavior therapy helps, however

I have seen the effects of behavior therapy. It helps, but only to the point that the autistic brain is receptive. The more profoundly autistic don't go very far with it. That means that

The next step has to be medical.

I agree with you wholeheartedly that the word "cure" is not even relevant in this arena. Recovery is definitely a possiblity, and after seeing major improvements in our daughter and effectively complete recovery of other children, I would say the first hurdle the parents jumped over is giving up the idea of cure in place of recovery. Once a child recovers I give all the right in the world for the parents to choose the word cured, and hope to be in that place some day. In the meantime we are working towards recovery, which should have been the argument here in the first place.

Thanks again for a well written piece in support of the correct definition to this argument. I believe that there probably would be a much different type of response and argument had the term "recovery" been used rather than "cure".
