Hours after finding out that she was expecting a healthy baby boy, a British teenager and her unborn child were unexpectedly killed by a blood clot.
Scarlett Holyoake from Risca, South Wales, collapsed at her home mere hours after scan results revealed that her unborn child was healthy. Sam Moulder, Holyoake’s boyfriend, said her pregnancy had been going well and she was looking forward to being a mother.
“We found out the day she died the results of the test to see whether the baby had a chance of having Down’s Syndrome,” Moulder recalled, as reported by The Daily Mail. “The results said the baby would be fine. Scarlett couldn’t have been happier before she died. She couldn’t wait to be a mother.”
Medical examinations revealed that Holyoake suffered from deep vein thrombosis. According to Mayo Clinic, deep vein thrombosis results when a blood clot forms in a deep vein, usually a leg. Although it can cause pain or swelling, it can also be completely symptomless. Pregnant women have an increased risk of suffering from deep vein thrombosis, as reported by The Daily Mail.

The blood formed during deep vein thrombosis can break free, travel through the circulatory system, and ultimately block blood flow from the lungs, causing a pulmonary embolism. Pulmonary embolisms cause sudden death for 25 percent of those who suffer from the condition.
A GoFundMe page has been sent up for Holyoake. More than 80 percent of the target $1400 has been raised in four days.
“Scarlett was a loving daughter, sister, niece and granddaughter,” reads the GoFundMe profile. “She will be utterly missed by her family and friends.”
On her Facebook page, friends have written their farewells to the 18-year-old, who was studying to be a chef.
