Woman Kills Pregnant Daughter

A 22-year-old pregnant woman was killed by her mother for marrying against her family's wishes.

Husband Mohammed Tofeeq reported the murder of his wife, Muqadas, in a local village in the Punjab province in Pakistan. Fox News reports that Muqadas supposedly brought dishonor upon her family by marrying a man that her family did not approve of.

Tofeeq claims that his pregnant wife was lured into her family home. Her mother, with assistance from her brother then slit her throat. Muqadas was already mother to a 10-month-old infant.

This incident is only one of many so-called "honor-killings" which occur when a daughter brings dishonor upon her family either by refusing to take part in an arranged marriage, partaking in a relationship not approved by her family, or even being the victim of rape. In the honor-killing system, the only way to protect a family's name and honor is to kill the woman who has violated these cultural norms, according to The Daily Wire.

Although Muqadas' mother has been arrested for her crime, most honor-killings remain unpunished. According to The New York Times, if the family of the victim forgives the murder, then the perpetrator is not prosecuted. For example, if a father kills his daughter for violating a cultural norm but the rest of his family forgives him, then he avoids imprisonment entirely.

More than 1,000 Pakistani women each year are killed for violating cultural norms.
