A 35-year-old Australian woman was stabbed to death by her Iranian husband after he discovered that she had converted to Christianity.

Amir Darbanou, 42, has been charged with the murder of his wife, Nasrin Abek, a hairdresser, after her body was found inside of their apartment in the Sydney suburb of Potts Point, reports The Sydney Morning Herald.

Darbanou, an Iranian immigrant, allegedly became enraged and stabbed his wife several times with a knife after learning that she had converted to Christianity.

The husband called his wife's father to let him know that his daughter was dead, reports the Daily Mail. Her father called the police "several times" to report the death before they took action. The next morning at about 6:20 a.m., police forced entry into the couple's apartment and found Abek's body.

This judge looked an inmate square in the eyes and did something that left the entire courtroom in tears:

Police say the couple did not have a previous history of domestic violence, but neighbors heard screaming coming from their apartment on the night of the murder.

Kings Cross Superintendent Michael Fitzgerald said that police recovered what they believe is the weapon Darbanou used to kill Abek where the apartment's garbage is dumped.

"We are not looking at any other suspects in this matter," Fitzgerald confirmed.

Darbanou is scheduled to appear in court again on Nov. 24.
