Two German men were sentenced to 14 years in prison for reportedly burning a pregnant teenager alive.
The incident occurred in January 2015. Eren Toben, 20 and his friend, Daniel Mueller, 20, allegedly told 19-year-old Maria Peiner that they were going to go shopping for baby clothes, the Daily Mirror reported.
Peiner was 8 months pregnant at the time. She was carrying Toben’s baby and looking forward to becoming a mother, the court heard.
Toben and Mueller then took Peiner into the woods. When they arrived, Toben reportedly hit Peiner with a piece of wood, stabbed her with a bread knife, poured petrol over her body, and set her on fire.
“She was still conscious, it could have been 10, 20, 30 seconds -- she was still moving,” Judge Regina Alex said in court, according to the Mirror.
Peiner’s body was found by a passerby the following day. Toben and Mueller were in custody soon after and blamed each other for the murder.
Toben’s fingerprints were found on the handle of the knife and both men were sentenced to 14 years in prison. They stood silent in court.
“For him the crime was a solution, he wanted a free, happy life which he had control over,” Alex said of Toben. “He abused Maria’s love for him to lure her into an ambush.”
“He acted for the sole purpose of taking pleasure in the destruction of another human being’s life,” Alex said of Mueller.
As for the victim’s family, they said they now hope they can move forward.
“I hope that our family can finally have some peace,” Peiner’s brother said after the sentencing, according to the Mirror.
