A video has emerged of an angry mob beating a man to death for raping and murdering an 11-year-old girl.
The beating took place in Nagaland in eastern India, the Daily Mail reports.
Ibo Cha, 18, was accused of raping and killing an 11-year-old girl back in September. Her body was found in a forest and locals became suspicious when they noticed the 18-year-old boy had fled.
Villagers decided to take the law into their own hands. They found Cha in Meluri village, dragged him out into the city center, stripped him, strung him up with rope, and took turns beating him for an hour. A crowd of more than 1,000 locals gathered to watch.
A “ring-leader” was present to make sure the villagers didn’t kill Cha too quickly. Cha eventually died from injuries.
Inspector General of Nagaland Wabang Jamir told the Daily Mail that Cha had not been arrested.
“The police was not informed about the rape and murder of the young girl,” Jamir said. “Unfortunately there was no report lodged and we only learnt about the case after the beating of this man incident.
“Three First Information Reports have been registered for the murder of the alleged rapist but the investigation is still ongoing.
“No one has been apprehended in the case so far but we are hopeful that we will soon make arrests.”
The video is said to have been shot in September. It surfaced online following the kidnapping and murder of another alleged rapist named Syed Sarif Khan in Dimapur.
Another angry mob broke Khan out of Central Jail, dragged him through the street naked, and beat him to death.
An investigation is currently underway following the arrest of 42 villagers involved in the beating.
A 25-year-old man was injured during the beating. He died in the hospital and four others were injured after police opened fire.
