As an act of respect for Ramadan, the United States Embassy celebrated the Fourth of July early this year. The annual Fourth of July celebration at the U.S. Embassy took place one month early, on Thursday, June 4, in order to avoid disrupting the time of fasting, which begins June 17 and lasts a month.
The day’s event honoring the 239th U.S. Independence day was themed “green” development to demonstrate America's commitment to building and sustaining an environmentally-conscious economy.
U.S. Ambassador to Indonesia, Robert O. Blake, and U.S. Ambassador to ASEAN, Nina Hachigian, oversaw the event and several high-status Indonesian officials were in attendence. Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja, Transportation Minister Ignasius Jonan, Coordinating Economic Minister Sofyan Djalil, Deputy Foreign Minister AM Fachir and Industry Minister Saleh Husin attended the event and other figures such as Golkar Party chairman Aburizal Bakrie, were present for the celebration, according to the Jakarta Post.
The day’s festivities included brass band performances of the Star-Spangled Banner and the Indonesian national anthem, Indonesia Raya. Various American products such as Zero FX Electric Motorcycles, which Blake explained as environmentally-friendly vehicles used by the California Highway Patrol, were also showcased during the celebration.
