UK Woman Says She's Too Fat To Go To Jail

UK woman Linda Ann Jenns argued recently that she can’t go to jail because she’s too fat.

Jenns knocked down Paul Stinton with her white Ford Kung after speeding through a red light. Some witnesses estimated that Jenns’ speed was around 70 mph. However, according to expert evidence, Jenns was traveling around 40 mph.

“It is the Crown’s case that it was the driving as a whole which fell far below the standards of a competent and careful driver,” prosecutor Simon Taylor said.

Stinton was taken to a hospital where he was evaluated and doctors confirmed that he suffered from head, chest, neck and abdominal injuries. As a result, Stinton died three weeks later and a jury found Jenns guilty of causing his death.

Jenns' lawyer Ian Bridge argued that the “morbidly obese” woman wouldn’t be able to handle a life behind bars. He explained that Jenns had suffered from a stroke seven years ago and was receiving treatment for her weight problem. Though Jenns reportedly lost around 80 pounds, she was hoping for a gastric band to increase her life expectancy.

“She is a person for whom a prison sentence would be extraordinarily difficult and I don’t think I exaggerate when I say she might not get through it,” Bridge said.

Judge Heather Norton adjourned sentence for two weeks, though she noted it’s likely that Jenns will face a jail sentence.
