Two Sisters Sentenced To Rape For Brother's Crime

An Indian council has allegedly sentenced two sisters to be raped in retaliation for their brother's crime of eloping with a married woman.

Amnesty International announced that Meenakshi Kumari, 23, and her 15-year-old sister were sentenced by an all-male village council on July 30. The sisters were also ordered to be paraded naked with blackened faces.

The married woman is a member of the Jat community, which holds considerable influence over the village.

"The Jat decision is final," Sumit Kumar, another brother of the two girls, said.

Meenakshi and her sister fled the village along with their family in May, fearing consequences for their brother's actions.

Meenakshi asked the Supreme Court for protection, and her father called on two national bodies to address the harassment his family has received from both the married woman's family and local police.

Ravi, the brother in question, and his family are from the Dalit community. Ravi and the married woman were allegedly dating but were separated after the woman's family married her off to someone else, according to Z News.

Amnesty International has set out to gather 50,000 signatures for a petition to demand immediate intervention by local authorities. Over 44,900 signatures have been collected.
