A teacher in Vietnam is facing prison time after hitting a six-year-old student across the face with a ruler for spelling a word wrong during a test.
Tran Thi Thu Tra has been suspended from Phin Ngan Elementary School in Vietnam’s Bat Xat district after assaulting a student with a ruler, the Daily Mail reported.
The six-year-old student, identified only as T., was taken to the hospital and treated for severe bruising under her eyes.
The incident occurred during a spelling test. Tran Thi Thu Tra reportedly became frustrated when she saw the student struggling to spell a word.
The teacher waited for the student to spell the word wrong and then lashed her across the face with a ruler.
School officials said the teacher has been suspended and could be terminated pending the investigation.
“Strict measures must be brought out to purge [the] school of violence,” Bat Xat education bureau said in a statement, according to News Grio.
The student’s mother, Chao Ke May, said her daughter was scarred by the incident.
“Two of her friends helped her home from school and she was in pain,” May told the Daily Mail. “Her face was swelling and there were bruises near her eyes. She was very upset and frightened.”
