Singer Wears Too Many Items Of Clothing On Plane, Collapses From Heat Exhaustion

Scottish boy band singer James McElvar collapsed on an airplane Wednesday from heat exhaustion after he put on 12 layers of clothes to avoid an excess luggage fee, reports the Daily Mail.

The 19-year-old had an extra bag, and airport workers told him he could throw away his bag, wear them, or pay nearly $70 to put it in with the rest of the luggage.

“I felt it was my only option to put everything on,” McElvar said, according to the Daily Mail. “It was impossible to walk, I could barely get on the plane. I wanted to take them all off as soon as I got to my seat - beside which was a spare seat that I could have sat one of my bags on - but was told I had to wait until we were up in the air.”

McElvar boarded the Easyjet flight from London to Glasgow wearing a whole suitcase worth of clothing – six shirts, four sweaters, three pairs of jeans, two pairs of running pants, two jackets, and two hats.

"It felt just like I was having a heart attack,” he said, according to The Belfast Telegraph. “I was so hot I felt I would pass out as soon as I boarded.”

As soon as possible, McElvar started to undress but he was already overheating and feeling sick and lightheaded. Flight attendants relocated him to the back of the plane and gave him a trash bag in case he vomited. The Daily Mail notes that he then became violently ill and threw up, missing the trash bag. He passed out shortly afterward.

Upon arrival in Glasgow Airport, McElvar was transported to an ambulance and taken to the hospital, reports the Belfast Telegraph.

"For everyone asking James is OK,” the band tweeted, “He is being looked after in hospital now back home safe in Glasgow. He sends you all his love."

“James is much better now,” the band tweeted later, according to the Belfast Telegraph. “Still in a bit of shock but he's recovered. And the other boys are fine and home safe."
