Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte called on his country's citizens to kill drug addicts on June 30.
According to The Guardian, the 71-year-old former mayor was sworn in as president earlier in the day, and then traveled to a slum in Manila where he called for the citizen executions in front of about 500 onlookers.
"These sons of whores are destroying our children," Duterte said. "I warn you, don’t go into that, even if you’re a policeman, because I will really kill you. If you know of any addicts, go ahead and kill them yourself as getting their parents to do it would be too painful."
He also called for people to go into the funeral business, and assured them that the police would aid in deaths.

"I assure you you won’t go bankrupt," Duterte promised. "If your business slows I will tell the police, 'Do it faster to help the people earn money.'"
During his inauguration speech at the presidential palace, Duterte promised dark times over the next six years:
"The ride will be rough but come join me just the same. The problems that bedevil our country today which need to be addressed with urgency are corruption, both in the high and low echelons in government, criminality in the streets and the rampant sale of illegal drugs in all strata of Philippine society and the breakdown of law and order."
Some have accused Duterte of being linked to vigilante death squads in the city of Davao where he served as mayor.

Human Rights Watch noted on July 17 that Duterte said during a TV broadcast on May 24, "Am I the death squad? True. That is true."
Duterte then promised to execute 100,000 criminals and drop them in Manila Bay.
The advocacy site quoted the former mayor as saying on May 15: "We’re the ninth safest city. How do you think I did it? How did I reach that title among the world’s safest cities? Kill them all [criminals]."
After being elected by his countrymen, some of whom he intends to execute, Duterte slammed the United Nations: "F--- you U.N., you can’t even solve the Middle East carnage ... couldn’t even lift a finger in Africa [with the] butchering [of] the black people. Shut up all of you," reports The Guardian.
BBC News notes that Duterte once said of an Australian female missionary who was raped and killed during a prison riot: "I saw her face and I thought, son of a bitch, what a pity... I was mad she was raped but she was so beautiful. I thought, the mayor should have been first."
Duterte reportedly made this comment about Pope Francis' visit to the country: "We were affected by the traffic. It took us five hours ... I wanted to call him: 'Pope, son of a whore, go home. Do not visit us again.'"
