Parents Say Newborn Baby Died After Being Attacked By Rats In Hospital

| by Michael Allen

The parents of a newborn baby boy claim he died on Aug. 26 because of several rat attacks inside the Government General Hospital in Guntur, in India's Andhra Pradesh state.

The baby was born on Aug. 17 at another hospital, but was moved to the hospital in Guntur because of health problems. The infant underwent surgery for a bladder birth defect on Aug. 20 and was on a ventilator until he died on Aug. 26.

"Early on Sunday morning my son started crying. As we are not allowed to stand next to the incubator, I urged the nurses to check on him,"  the baby's mother, Lakshmi said, reports The Telegraph India. "By the time they did, rats had eaten away the fingers of his right hand and also the eye."

The baby's father, Chavali Nagaraju Babu, said on Aug. 26: "This morning the hospital superintendent told me I need not worry as I have another son."

Hospital officials claim the baby died due to complications following his surgery, notes NDTV.

The parents say they complained to hospital officials about the earlier rat bites on their child, so the hospital placed rat traps in the intensive care unit.

The hospital’s superintendent, Dr. Venugopala Rao, told The Hindu, a local newspaper:

"The presence of rodents had come to our notice on Monday morning and I asked the engineering wing to carry out repairs to the false ceiling, but unfortunately this morning, the rodents attacked the newborn again."

Venugopa said that Andhra Pradesh Health Minister Dr. Kamineni Srinivas has asked for a report from the hospital.
