Jay Cheshire of Southampton, England, hanged himself in July 2015 after being falsely accused of rape. He was 17-years-old.

His mother, Karin Cheshire, 55, hanged herself on July 18, reports The Daily Mirror.

"The rape allegation was the main reason he killed himself,” Karin testified to the Winchester Crown Court following his death. Jay's accuser withdrew the allegations two weeks after she made them, but he remained distraught.

Karin, too, became distraught after his suicide, and was allegedly heartbroken as a result. She had become “vacant” and “zombie-like” after his death, according to her family.

As her brother, Simon, put it: "I now think Karin had been preparing for this, as we've been clearing out her house for the past three months. It came to the anniversary of Jay's death and, sadly, although I almost expected her to do something, I'm shocked she actually took her life in the same fashion. She just couldn't see a future without Jay."

The son had survived his suicide attempt, but was on life support, which his mother decided to terminate after two days.

"I switched his life support off," she explained. "If I have to think about it I will cry. It's the worst thing a mum could have to do."

Jay, who wanted to become a history teacher or a writer, had a history of depression. He was on antidepressants and was due to undergo cognitive behavior therapy.

A study published in June by the world’s leading medical journal, The Lancet, suggests a strong correlation between antidepressant drugs and teen suicide, reports CBS News.
