A young boy lost his leg after his mother pushed him in front of an oncoming train, according to German police.
The train driver said he was unable to stop the train before hitting the boy.
The incident occurred on Oct. 18 at the Hoheluftbruecke station in Hamburg, Germany, Sky News reports. The 31-year-old mother was identified as Jana, and her 11-year-old son as Leon.
Jana allegedly tried to flee the scene but was captured by passengers and held until police arrived, according to WorldWide Weird News.
Paramedics worked for 40 minutes to free Leon from under the train. At the hospital, doctors had to amputate the boy’s leg.
Jana was arrested and charged with attempted murder. She was ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation, as investigators believe the woman suffers from a mental illness.
A newspaper vendor who witnessed the scene explained that Jana was "completely hysterical" during the arrest, Sky News reports.
