Islamic State group militants released footage of the disturbing conditions inside a notorious Syrian prison where people opposed to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad were kept before the Islamic State’s takeover of the city.

Last week, Islamic State group militants seized the city of Palmyra and freed all prisoners still inside the infamous Tadmor Prison. Now, the terrorist organization has released video footage (below) and images showing the shocking conditions.

In the footage, tiny jail cells without windows are seen going up and down the hallways. The cells appear to be kept completely dark, and have primitive squat toilets.

Prisoners were reportedly held at Tadmor for decades as conditions were virtually unchanged, and the prison itself is notorious for its use of torture tactics and frequent executions. Tadmor was reportedly the site of a government-sponsored massacre in 1980.

The Daily Mail points out that the footage was released by Islamic State group as propaganda, but it does shed light onto just how brutal conditions at the prison were for so long. Take a look at the shocking footage of the conditions inside the now empty Tadmor Prison below.
