Elephant Kills Girl With Rock At Zoo (Video)

A 7-year-old girl was fatally injured after an elephant threw a rock at her with its trunk at a Moroccan zoo on July 26 (video below).

The child's father put her on his shoulders with his back to the elephant as the mother took a picture of them, notes the Daily Mail.

The girl was then hit in the back of the head with a large rock lodged by the elephant, reports The Independent.

A bystander filmed the aftermath of the tragic incident, which included a close up of the rock and the girl surrounded by her family and zoo employees.

The child was knocked unconscious, and later passed away at a local hospital.

A zoo spokesman said in a press release: "This kind of accident is rare, unpredictable and unusual."

The spokesman added, "Accidents of this nature happen in international zoos, most recently in Disney World Orlando and the Cincinnati Zoo in the United States."

Social media users thought the ambulance took a long time to arrive at the zoo, which should have had its own medical staff, reports the Daily Mail.

One social media user noted: "How is it possible that the place receives a large number of visitors but there is no ambulance station?"

In the UK, renowned scientist Stephen Hawking warned that Britain's recent vote to exit the European Union, also known as Brexit, could have disastrous consequences.

In an op-ed for The Guardian on July 29, Hawking wrote:

We will need to adapt, rethink, refocus and change some of our fundamental assumptions about what we mean by wealth, by possessions, by mine and yours. Just like children, we will have to learn to share.

If we fail then the forces that contributed to Brexit, the envy and isolationism not just in the UK but around the world that spring from not sharing, of cultures driven by a narrow definition of wealth and a failure to divide it more fairly, both within nations and across national borders, will strengthen. If that were to happen, I would not be optimistic about the long-term outlook for our species.
