A woman abandoned her baby after secretly giving birth in her bathroom because she was afraid that the child was the result of an affair and didn't want her husband to find out.
Leigh-Anne Varley, 36, spent her pregnancy telling her husband, Simon Varley, and her two children that she had ovarian cysts which caused swelling — when, in reality, she was pregnant with another man's baby and trying to hide it.
Leigh-Anne planned the whole scheme down to how she would deliver the baby herself, using scissors and towels, and where to abandon the baby.
She gave birth in her bathroom while her 6-year-old was asleep, her husband was working a night shift, and her 16-year-old daughter was out with friends. She used kitchen scissors and wrapped the placenta in a bag, dumping it into a garbage can.
Once she gave birth, Leigh-Anne wrapped her baby, who hospital midwives later named Jack, in a dressing gown and left him in the doorway of a block of flats near her home in Horden in County Durham, England. The baby was left with a note that read, "Please take care of my baby boy and please don't go public as my husband is violent and will kill me."
Hours later, a man walking his dog spotted the baby, who was fortunately unharmed.
Leigh-Anne admitted to her offense and explained the situation to police.
"She said she had an affair and she believed the baby was the result of that affair," said prosecutor Sarah Traynor. "She was unable to tell her husband because she was fearful of breaking up the family unit. This is a very sad case, she is of previous good character and was in a desperate situation which led to the offense occurring."
Leigh-Anne pleaded guilty to assault and ill treatment or neglect of a young person. She was sentenced to 14 weeks in prison and ordered to pay $505.
