Biden: Russia Wants To Destroy Democracies Worldwide

| by Ray Brown

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Vice President Joe Biden said Russia is trying to disrupt the "liberal international order."

“Those who wish to dissolve the community of democracies and our supporting institutions in favor of a more parochial international order-where power rules and spheres of influence lock in divides among nations,” Biden said, according to Fortune. “We hear these voices in the West -- but the greatest threats on this front spring from the distinct illiberalism of external actors who equate their success with a fracturing of the liberal international order.”

He added: “We see this in Asia and the Middle East -- where China and Iran would clearly prefer a world in which they hold sway in their regions. But I will not mince words. This movement is principally led by Russia.”

Biden went on to repeat the common argument among Democrats that Russian hackers influenced the American presidential election, leading to the loss of its party's candidate, Hillary Clinton.

"Under President Putin, Russia is working with every tool available to them to whittle away at the edges of the European project, test the fault lines of western nations and return to a politics defined by spheres of influence," Biden said. “We even saw it in the cyber intrusions against political parties and individuals in the United States - which our intelligence community has determined with high confidence were specifically motivated to influence our elections. But it's not only the United States that has been targeted. Europe has seen the same kind of attacks in the past.”

Biden sent a warning to European leaders that the Russian government could influence their elections.

“And with many countries in Europe slated to hold elections this year, we should expect further attempts by Russia to meddle in the democratic process,” he said.

In an interview with The New York Times, Biden said that he worried President-elect Donald Trump will be isolationist on foreign policy and do too little on the international stage.

“The question I get everywhere is: ‘Is American leadership going to continue?’” Biden said. If Trump “just stays behind the lines -- hands off -- it could be very ugly. Very, very ugly.”
