A zoo in Gyumri, Armenia, has been dubbed the "world's worst zoo" because of its rundown cages and hungry animals (video below).

The zoo holds only three lions, two bears and two guinea pigs, notes the Daily Mail.

The zoo is owned by a billionaire who held parties there, but when the wealthy owner disappeared, so did the upkeep. There has not been a paying guest for two years.

The animals survive on meat scraps and plants brought to them by an impoverished elderly couple, Hovhamnes and Alvina Madoyan.

Gyumri is the same town where the ancestors of the Kardashians are from. The local authorities refuse to help the animals, according to The Sun.

International Animal Rescue, based in the U.K., is trying to draw attention to the animals' situation and get the Armenian authorities involved.

"The fate of these animals should not be dependent on the philanthropy of an elderly couple who barely have enough for themselves," a spokesperson from the animal rights group told the Daily Mail.

"They endure in terrible conditions," the spokesperson added. "We need to try to get enough money for them to be moved to a place where they can be better cared for."
