A young girl in Syria reportedly walked into a police station with a bomb strapped to her body before being blown up (video below).

According to the Daily Mail, an explosion at a police station in the Midan neighborhood of the Syrian capital of Damascus was caused by a 7-year-old girl with a bomb strapped around her on a belt.

"A seven-year-old girl entered the police station, carrying a belt that was detonated from afar," Syrian paper, Al-Watan, based in the capital city, wrote in a Facebook post.

Police sources revealed to the paper that the child had walked into the police station and asked to use the bathroom, appearing to be lost. Suddenly, the explosives went off.

The device was reportedly detonated by the girl's handlers, who were outside the building nearby.

The police station was reduced to rubble, as footage taken at the scene following the explosion reveals.

According to the Daily Mail, explosions in the city of Damascus are rare, though rebel groups have occasionally fired rockets and mortar rounds.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights say that they received reports that "one woman" was killed in the police station explosion, but it has not been confirmed whether the woman was a bystander or the suicide bomber.

It has yet to be confirmed how many casualties resulted from the blast.

According to Metro, the bombing may be related to a video in which jihadi parents are seen kissing their two daughters goodbye before sending one on a suicide mission. Syrian journalists reported that one of the girls in the video may have been sent to the police station in Damascus.

The horrific bombing comes as thousands of children are being killed by President Bashar al-Assad's forces moving into the besieged city of Aleppo.
