A 10-year-old boy in India was forced to do 170 push-ups by a maulvi, which is a title given to Islamic scholars, as punishment for not memorizing a chapter from the Quran. The boy was also beaten with a stick and had his hair pulled.
The incident occurred a few days ago at a madrasa (a college for Islamic instruction) in India near the Pilibhit Bypass Road area. The boy fainted and was taken to the hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.
Locals and the parents of the boy are enraged by the punishment. "We are appalled at the way the teacher has treated my son, " the father said, as reported by Times of India. "Is this the way students are supposed to learn? The strictest punishment should be given to the teacher so that such incidents are not repeated."
Doctors from the hospital where the boy is being treated said he sustained serious injuries in his ribs and backbone.

The maulvi fled the scene when the boy fainted. Police are searching for him.
"We have lodged a case against the teacher and two other madarsa staff under Section 325 of Indian Penal Code and investigations are on, " said Mohd Qasim, Baradari police station inspector. "The guilty would soon be apprehended."
Punishment for not learning the Quran can be deadly, as in the case of 7-year-old Yaseen Ege from the United Kingdom. His mother, Sara Ege, was sentenced to life in prison in 2010 after being found guilty of murder, and will have to serve 17 years before she can be considered for parole.
Ege began to beat young Yaseen with a stick after he was unable to recite passages of the Quran. The physical beatings lasted for three months until Yaseen finally succumbed to his injuries and died.

In order to hide the abuse, Ege set Yaseen’s body on fire in an attempt to conceal the wounds he had received.
According to the Guardian, Ege told police she was "getting angry too much," adding: "I would shout at Yaseen all the time. I was getting very wild and I hit Yaseen with a stick on his back like a dog."
