As a former Police Officer I can tell you that marijuana was a was a waste of my time. For one, I can tell you that I never arrested anyone for DUI/marijuana. If I pulled someone over, it was never obvious unless I smelled it. I did make quite a few arrests for possession though. Each arrest I made meant I had to go to court min 2hrs. The offenders usually farted around and kept continuing the court date till they finished some school so the judge would be more lenient. On average I went to court twice per offender. My overtime pay was $45.00/hr. So each arrest was $90.00 instantly gone from taxpayer money. Think paperwork, jail, court, etc. We are working on a war with outdated knowledge. I think it should be legalized and taxed. Legalization would create a crazy amount of jobs. Retailers, merchandisers, inspectors, producers, etc. It would also free up resources to take care of more serious drugs and crime . It would lessen the load on the courts and jails. The benefits clearly outweigh the loss. I don't smoke it and I dont care to hang around people while they use it. The biggest argument I've heard so far is "its a gateway drug". That is just not true. If mind altering substances were gateway drugs then wouldn't alcohol be considered a gateway drug? You dont hear people whining about that. Ive noticed that people, when they want something, they will try anything to get it. Next time you are at a dept store go to the garden center and grab a package of of morning glory seeds and seeds from any other plant there. On the morning glory package is a warning not to use the seeds for anything other than planting. The other package doesn't have that warning. Does it mean I shouldnt shove them up my bunghole?

Two people I went to highschool with used to smoke a little pot. 20 years later, they were mindless losers that has lost everything in life that makes life worth while. And, yeah, society DOES have to pick up the tab on an endless list of liabilities created by these addicts. The lost jobs , the broken homes, the abandoned children , the never ending chain of treatment centers, the things they steal, the crimes they commit, the food they eat, the roofs over their heads, their medical bills, their traffic accidents, and the list goes on.

If it was a victimless crime , I'd say smoke until you drop dead. But it's not a victimless crime. Every addict alive believes the rest of the world owes them a free ride and that society should simply put up with their misconduct.

And while some will claim pot isn't a gateway drug, the claim is an obvious lie. A gateway drug to heroin ? Maybe not. A gateway drug to alcohol addiction? Certainly. Marijuana addicts typically start out quite young, long before they can legally buy alcohol. When they reach the age of majority, their addictive behavior is firmly established and the road to oblivion is unbelievably fast. Where the pure alcoholic may take several decades for the addiction to be fully established, the duel addict is often past the point of no return in a few short years.

Prison is society's way of telling you that you present a clear and present danger to the whole, and are unfit to remain among us. The psychotics, sociopaths and the criminally insane don't appreciate why this should be so. Of course, if they were sane enough to understand why their conduct is unaccpetable, there would be no need to lock them away in the first place.

Any decisions concerning quality, quantity, distribution and availability are then left in the hands of unregulated, anonymous, ruthless drug dealers, who are interested only in the huge profits involved.

Many of us have now finally wised up to the fact that the best avenue towards realistically dealing with drug use and addiction is through proper regulation, which is what we already do with alcohol & tobacco --two of our most dangerous mood altering substances. But for those of you whose ignorant and irrational minds traverse a fantasy plane of existence, you will no doubt remain sorely upset with any type of solution that does not seem to lead to the absurd and unattainable utopia of a drug free society.

There is an irrefutable connection between drug prohibition and the crime , corruption, disease and death it causes. If you are not capable of understanding this connection, then maybe you're using something far stronger than the rest of us. Anybody 'halfway bright' and who's not psychologically challenged, should be capable of understanding, that it is not simply the demand for drugs that creates the mayhem; it is our refusal to allow legal businesses to meet that demand.

No amount of money , police powers, weaponry, diminution of rights and liberties, wishful thinking or pseudo- science will make our streets safer; only an end to prohibition can do that. How much longer are you willing to foolishly risk your own survival by continuing to ignore the obvious, historically confirmed solution?

If you still support the kool aid mass suicide cult of prohibition, and erroneously believe that you can win a war without logic and practical solutions, then prepare yourself for even more death, corruption, terrorism , sickness, imprisonment, unemployment , foreclosed homes, and the complete loss of the rule of law and the Bill of Rights.

You're the one on drugs , pal, which may account for your sense free reasoning, assuming you weren't mentally handicapped prior to becoming an addict.

Your argument applies to all drugs , including heroin , cocaine , speed, downers, etc.. By your reasoning prohibition is the sole problem for drug addicts and the prime cause of their criminal acts.

These arguments are, and remain, the rationalizations of a sociopath. It's on par with saying that legalizing bank robbery will cure the problem of those poor unfortunate victims of the system persecuted for not having enough of the necessary. Perhaps in your delusional, incapicated mental state, you truly are unaware that you sound like a raving lunatic to anyone not under the influence of powerful psychoactive drugs.

The prohibition of dangerous drugs does accomplish many important goals. First and foremost is that it deters many potential victims of addiction from acquiring the habit in the first place. Second and nearly as important, it provides society the tools needed to mitigate the damage caused by those who have fallen off the edge of reason.

The single characteristic all addicts have in common is the inability recognize the point where they accept insanity as a normal state of mind. You've quite obviously long since reached that point.

So, smoke another joint. Go hang out with others suffering from mutual mental impairment. In a few hours you'll be able to forget you accidently ran into someone able to recognize how far gone you really are. If you smoke enough, you may even be able to burn out that piece of you that knows something is seriously wrong with your mind. For awhile, anyhow. Good luck.

Go back to high school economics class. Learn about supply and DEMAND. Learn that you cannot up DEMAND simply by upping supply. Contrary to your held superstition, drugs are not PUSHED, the drug dealers are filling a DEMAND not creating one, and the futile attempt at curtailing that demand is causing mayhem for the rest of us.

The statement about rules and laws has a problem. It is an exercise in futility to create a law of man to stop something that is a law of nature. The laws of nature(human nature) will win every time, the best outcome in something like this is that it will just delay the inevitable. Humans will do what humans do regardless of any law.
