Prevention Magazine recently pored through The Big Doctors Book of Home Remedies to find the strangest home treatments for common ailments – and they actually work.
Yogurt can curb bad breath by replacing halitosis-causing bacteria with the live active cultures this dairy snack contains. Recent clinical studies suggest that eating one serving of yogurt a day can cut down on stink-producing hydrogen sulfide in your mouth. Yogurt also contains Vitamin D, which may create an “inhospitable environment” for bad bacteria in the mouth.
Got calluses or areas of hard, dry skin on your feet? Licorice can help. Buy natural licorice sticks, grind them up, mix them with petroleum jelly and apply the mixture to your feet. Licorice contains substances that soften these rough spots of skin. It’s also anti-inflammatory and antibacterial, which will help your feet heal if they’re so dry that they’re cracked.
Olive oil helps soothe eczema. Steer clear of creams containing olive oil, and just go right for the bottle of extra-virgin at the grocery store – creams and lotions may also contain ingredients that could further irritate this skin condition. If your eczema is particularly bad, try spreading olive oil on the affected area of skin before bed, then covering it with plastic wrap. Remove the wrap in the morning. Olive oil contains oleuropein acid, which is antiviral, antifungal and antibacterial.

Got a wart? Stick some duct tape on it. A clinical trial published in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine indicated that duct tape works better on warts than freezing. Make a little wart band-aid out of duct tape by cutting a small piece and placing it on the wart. Every three days, replace the tape and remove dead skin with a nail file or a pumice stone. This method should work within two months.
