Answering the call from mosque opponents, Donald Trump has offered to buy out one of the investors in the site near Ground Zero, offering a 25% premium on the purchase price.
Trump is offering $6 million to Hisham Elzanaty, a day after the Egyptian-born investor said he would be willing to sell. "Develop it, raze it, sell it," he told the Associated Press. "If someone wants to give me 18 or 20 million dollars today, it's all theirs."
Elzanaty provided $4.8 million in funding for the site last year. He is one of eight investors in the property, and it's not known what type of authority he has to sell.
In a letter released Thursday by Trump's publicist, Trump tells Elzanaty that he's not making the offer because he thinks the location is spectacular, rather because it would end "a very serious, inflammatory, and highly divisive situation."
