An actor who appeared in TV series Ugly Betty and in the movie Step Up 3D, has been taken into custody after allegedly killing his mother with a samurai sword inside her New York home, police say.
Michael L Brea was taken into custody in Brooklyn after cops swooped the apartment after neighbours complained of a disturbance.
Yannick Brea, 55, was found in her second-floor Brooklyn apartment at around 2:20 am with multiple stab wounds, the New York Post reports.
Police say Brea took his mother hostage in their apartment before stabbing her multiple times, fatally.
There are also reports that the woman was found decapitated.
Police had been called to a domestic disturbance at Brea’s home prior to the killing, but left shortly after.
Neighbours Vernal Bent and his mother Phyllis said they heard yelling from Brea’s apartment.
“It sounded like a lady’s voice and after a while I just didn’t hear the woman’s voice again,” he said.
“Michael was yelling, ‘Repent, repent, sinner, sinner’, over and over again,” said Gregory Clare who lived below the apartment.. “He was screaming, ‘You never accepted Jesus’. It was real loud”.
Another neighbour said: “Her screams woke me up. Screams I’ll never forget. I heard [Michael] rambling. He was incoherent”.
Michael Brea was spouting gibberish when he was removed from the Park Place apartment on a stretcher, neighbours said.
He was taken to Kings County Hospital for a psychiatric exam after his arrest.
No charges have been filed against Brea yet.
