Gay College Student Commits Suicide After Roommate Tapes Him Having Sex

| by

Rutgers University student Tyler Clementi, 18, committed suicide September 23rd after jumping to his death from the George Washington Bridge into the Hudson River.

The reason? Two Rutgers students, Clementi’s roommate Dharun Ravi, 18, of Plainsboro and Molly Wei, 18, of Princeton, placed a secret video camera in his room on September 19th and recorded him having sex. The sex tape was later broadcast on the internet.

Ravi and Wei have been charged with two counts each of invasion of privacy, and Ravi has been charged with 2 additional counts for attempting to record Tyler Clementi two days after the initial recording was made.

The day of the first recording Ravi posted on his Twitter: “Roommate asked for the room till midnight. I went into Molly’s room and turned on my webcam. I saw him making out with a dude. Yay.”

Tyler Clementi’s body has not yet been recovered but his vehicle has been located near the George Washington bridge, his laptop and phone still inside.

If convicted Dharun Ravi and Molly Wei face up to five years in prison.

Such a sad story. I’m guessing this was all because Tyler Clementi was gay. The Tweet posted by Ravi seems to point in that direction. Would this have happened if Clementi were straight? Probably not. This seems like a hate crime to me.

Our thoughts are with the family of Tyler Clementi. Such a tragedy.
