Tottenham’s Assou-Ekotto on Wayne Rooney: “Dirty Prostitute Shagger”

| by Alex Groberman

Just when the drama began to die down for Wayne Rooney and Manchester United, Tottenham’s defender Benoit Assou-Ekotto brought them back into the spotlight.

The usually calm and collected player had some not-so-nice things to say about Rooney in a recent interview with French soccer magazine So Foot.

Here is the best quote from that article:

“The tendency in football at the moment is that as long as you’re not a prostitute shagger then it’s OK, it’s no big deal," he said. "Wayne’s not very well and it’s a dirty thing for his wife to know he had relations with a prostitute. He was seeing the same bird for seven months.”

It’s interesting to see a professional athlete take such a high moral stand on another professional athlete. Maybe it’s an American thing, but over here in the States you rarely -- if ever -- see one basketball/football/baseball player slam another for his extramarital indiscretions. Another thing you never hear? Somebody say they play just for the money. Assou-Ekotto did just that, saying he plays football for the paycheck and doesn't love the sport.

At the very least, this will add another subplot to future Tottenham-Manchester United matches -- when Rooney plays. With Rooney sidelined due to injury, Benoit "The Moralist" Assou-Ekotto had a chance to beat Manchester United on Saturday but the Spurs were shut out. So much for making a statement on the pitch.

At least you got your paycheck, Benoit. So that's all that matters.
