The North American Aerospace Defense Command scrambled two F-16 jets to follow an American Airlines flight until it landed safely at New York's Kennedy Airport today. The reason? An unnamed passenger used the on-board toilet too many times before getting locked in the bathroom.
Afterwards, officals played down the potty event. One law enforcement official said it wasn't thought to be terrorism and American Airlines spokesman Tim Smith said, "In our eyes, it's a big nothing."
John Cornelio, spokesman for the North American Aerospace Defense Command described the measure as "precautionary."
New York has been in a heightened state of security (and paranoia) after federal officials claimed to received a credible, but unconfirmed tip of a car bomb plot on the 9/11 tenth anniversary in either New York or Washington.
The incident came as thousands of NYPD officers lined the city's streets on high alert on the 10th anniversary of 9/11. There were other "suspected terrorism" moments at airports across the country; all turned out to be harmless.
