Undocumented College Student Waves Mexican Flag At California Graduation

| by Michael Allen

Indira Esparza, an undocumented college student, caused controversy when she unfurled a Mexican flag during her graduation ceremony on June 14 at the Thurgood Marshall College at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD).

Esparza, now 22, came to the U.S. with her family when she was two years old.

The San Diego Union Tribune reports that Esparza endured financial problems, worries about her family being deported for violating U.S. immigration laws and societal judgment due to her Mexican citizenship.

Esparza helped found the Undocumented Student Services Center at UCSD to help other undocumented students who felt judged because of their immigration status.

Esparza received her Bachelor’s degree in political science, but plans to pursue her masters and doctorate degrees.

The Daily Caller reports, "It’s not clear how Esparza obtained funding to attend UCSD as an undergraduate or how she will finance her Master’s degree."
