An East London mother-to-be died after trainee surgeons who were supposed to taking out her appendix removed her ovary instead. Maria De Jesus was diagnosed with appendicitis after going to the hospital because of severe abdominal pain. De Jesus, 32, was five months pregnant at the time. Since her untreated appendicitis was never dealt with, she returned to the hospital two weeks later with a severe blood infection.

De Jesus had a miscarriage and doctors were forced to perform an emergency operation in an attempt to save her life. The operation was a failure and De Jesus died after suffering major organ failure, The Daily Mail reported.

Her husband, Adelino, said a “litany of errors” had been made. He plans to take legal action against Queen’s Hospital in Romford, East London.

“My wife’s death could have been prevented, I am sure of it,” he said. “By the time they realized how serious the situation was — and they promised us all the best consultants — it was too late.”

This judge looked an inmate square in the eyes and did something that left the entire courtroom in tears:

The 53-year-old added:

“This is neglect, this is an unlawful killing. If my wife had been given treatment by fully qualified staff and people were informed of the mistake earlier she could still be alive. She went to hospital with stomach pains and we were told she needed to have her appendix out. She had the operation and left hospital eight days later, but the pain continued. We wouldn’t have ever imagined what they had done.”

Barking, Havering and Redbridge Hospital Trust has admitted liability for De Jesus’ death.

“The trust fully accepts the inquest verdict," said chief executive Averil Dongworth. "I would once again like to apologize unreservedly to Mrs. De Jesus’ family for their loss. We have admitted liability in this case. The staff involved in Mrs. De Jesus’ care have been deeply affected by her death.”
