A 16-year-old boy riding on top of a double decker bus in Los Angeles was critically injured when he slammed his head into a concrete overpass on the 405 Freeway.

Forty-five minors and chaperones were on the bus when the incident happened just before 8 p.m. Thursday, according to CBS Los Angeles. It was traveling 45 mph, police said.

The boy was taken to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Harbor City, where he was listed in critical condition Thursday.

Investigators are looking into whether the boy stood up.

A witness told NBC Los Angeles that the boy may have been dancing on a seat with his back to the signs when his head and hands hit the sign. The unidentified witness says he then collapse on the floor of the bus.

The bus, operated by Starline Tours, is allowed to travel on the freeway, according to California Highway Patrol Sgt. Todd Powers.
