North Carolina Pastor Interrupts, Protests Gay Weddings

| by Michael Allen

Gay marriage became legal in North Carolina on Oct. 10 when the state's anti-LGBT constitutional amendment was overturned by a federal judge.

Operation Save America, led by Pastor Flip Benham (father of anti-gay activists David and Jason Benham), has begun protesting gay marriages in Charlotte, North Carolina, notes RightWingWatch.org.

Pastor Benham led protests against same-sex weddings that were held outside the Mecklenburg County and Courts Office, reported the Charlotte Observer.

According to GOQNotes.com, Pastor Benham's group “interrupted several couples’ weddings as supporters held up a large rainbow flag to block his view. Another protester waved a bible in the air as he screamed several profanities and vulgarities. He was asked by sheriff’s deputies to tone it down or leave."

Human Rights Campaign (HRC) board member Shelly Schoenfeld countered, “The HRC is thrilled to be working with Equality NC and local organizations. This day is obviously monumental and very impactful, but there is much more that we and other organizations need to do to continue the work in the fight for equality in terms of discrimination, specifically workplace equality and healthcare equality.”

Pastor Benham also preached against what he called "homosexual sodomites" at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte in 2012 (video below). Pastor Benham told Fiona Dawson that homosexuality would lead to "drinking blood and eating flesh."
