Only days after the mass shooting at a Charleston, South Carolina, church, which left nine people dead, Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas was cracking gun jokes during a campaign stop in Red Oak, Iowa.

Cruz made the remarks at a town hall meeting on June 19, noted The Huffington Post (video below).

"You know the great thing about the state of Iowa, I'm pretty sure you all define gun control the same way we do in Texas, hitting what you aim at," Cruz said.

Cruz also recalled going to a gun range with his wife in New Hampshire.

"And my wife, Heidi, who is 5-foot-2, blonde and petite, California blonde, she was standing at the tripod unloading the full auto machine gun with a pink baseball cap that said 'Armed and Fabulous,'" Cruz stated.

Cruz reportedly didn't mention the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church shooting during the town hall meeting, but finally did speak about it when asked by reporters,The Washington Post noted.

Cruz said:

"It's sad to see the Democrats take a horrific crime and try to use it as an excuse, not to go after people with serious mental illness, or people who are repeat felons or criminals, but instead try to use it as an excuse to take away Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens. Those are altogether different issues."

Cruz didn't name any Democrats specifically who are supposedly trying to "take away Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens."

Cruz has been a strong opponent of the president's health care plan, which requires some coverage for mental health care, noted The Fiscal Times.
