5 Steps to Starting Your Fitness Regimen

It's not as hard as you're making it out to be. Your fitness doesn't have to be hard or complicated, so stop letting that excuse keep you from stepping into your new body. So where DO you start? Doing just these things will reward you with big results.

1. Eliminate the things you *know* you shouldn't eat.
Be real. You know what they are. That guilty little feeling that has you hesitating to reach for the donut is your fitness conscience saying *noooooooo*, but too often we ignore that voice. Like a child calling, Mom, Mom, Mom, Mom, Mom, Mom, Mom, …. eventually you get so used to the voice you don't really hear it. It's time to LISTEN. If you simply listened to that voice, you'd save yourself 100s of calories a week, which could result in losing layers, not to mention the good you'd do for your insides.

2. Eat the things you *know* you should.
Again, you know what they are. Veggies, fruit, chicken, fish, egg whites, whole grains such as brown rice, quinoa, oatmeal, steel-cut oats. The more natural and organic, the better. Eat smaller meals more often to reduce cravings and hunger. Eating frequently keeps blood sugar steady, which keeps energy from dipping. It also keeps away your starving-monster mode, which takes away all your nutritional common sense and has you tipping the entire bag of chips into your mouth. As you eat better, you'll start to crave better food. Don't get sucked into the studies about what you MUST eat, or you'll get overwhelmed. Just start by sticking with the basics listed above - the more natural, the more green, and the less processed the better.

3. Move your body.
Move faster and more often. You can start just by taking walks 3-4 days a week. Get a good pace going and shoot to walk 20-30 minutes. Or if you need more excitement, or the motivation of a group, look into fitness classes. I suggest something that gets your heart pounding like Zumba, spin, or an overall body-workout class. There are many different kinds offered by gyms or fitness studios. Take a moment to Google what's in your area and sign up for a free class. If muscles are your aim, then there's nothing better than hiring a trainer. If you're new to lifting, it's almost impossible to figure out what you should do, and how you should do it. You don't want to injure yourself before you really get started. Yes, it costs money, but it truly is an investment in your health. Bottom line, it's cheaper to be healthy than sick.

4. Toss the junk foods out of your house.
Get rid of the temptation. You know if it's not there, you wouldn't eat it. I know you love it, but not only is it bad for you, it makes you feel bad both physically and emotionally. That food is what's holding you back from your body and is an absolute destroyer of your goals and health. I don't mean to sound dramatic, but it's simply the truth. Junk-food-joy lasts the 15 minutes you're eating it, but dumping the junk for clean eating gives you a body you can enjoy every day, ALL the time.

5. Give yourself a goal.

There's nothing like a goal to keep you focused and on task. It could be a race, a competition, losing layers for a big event, or simply being able to fit into a smaller size. Whatever it is, set the date on the calendar, circle it in red, and stick to it! Hold yourself accountable and when you feel yourself falter, imagine what you will look like, feel like, on that date…like a new person.

The hardest part is starting, and that's only temporary. Do it.
