WASHINGTON --- Family Research Council (FRC) President Tony Perkins today urged the citizens of Maine to exercise their right to a "People's Veto" and defeat the counterfeit marriage bill signed today by Governor John Baldacci (D).

"Today, Governor Baldacci signed a dangerous bill designed to destroy marriage and family structure as we know it, while paving the way for the establishment and protection of a preferred class of citizens in Maine.

"However, the Governor also stated his belief 'that the ultimate political power in the state belongs to the people.' We agree. So, we call on the governor to become the first to sign a 'People's Veto' petition and affirm the people's right to resolve a matter of such grave importance. He should then urge the people of Maine to join him in this action.

"Because of the profound importance of man-woman marriage to the nation, we too urge the citizens of Maine to exercise their right to a 'People's Veto' and halt this move toward counterfeit marriage. This citizen petition effort requires 60,000 signatures to force a statewide vote on a measure that is vital to our children's future.

"Governor Baldacci and the Democratic-dominated legislature have failed to protect the rights of families and children by refusing to protect the institution of marriage, which provides the next generation with the best environment for growth, health and happiness. By providing the means for the establishment of special rights for a select few, they have acted at the expense of the natural family and future generations.

"The people of Maine have the right to respond to protect marriage and they should do so promptly."

Tony Perkins of the hate group FRC knows very well that recognizing gay marriage will not harm a single marriage anywhere in the universe, much less "destroy marriage and the family structure." Indeed, it is FRC and those opposing marriage equality who want to tear apart families. These marriages are real, real families and it's ONLY bigotry that pretends they're not. FRC is FINE with destroying families, if the families include gay people.

The hypocrisy of pretending this is about "Growth, health , and happiness" is sickening. Discrimination doesn't make a single person grow, doesn't make a single person healthy, and darn well doesn't make a single person happy.

The fact FRC ignores, and wants us all to ignore, is this--NOBODY will "turn gay" because they can get married, or "turn straight" because they cannot. These laws won't affect the sexual orientation of anyone. So, there will still be JUST as many gays, but instead of promoting marriage and family structure for them, FRC promotes that they NOT be married, NOT be in families, and we all know what the alternative is.

So much for the myth that they care about families.

The APA has providing efficient info supporting same sex adoption and same sex parents. Nothing proves that they are any less of a parent because of their relationship, and nothing proves them to be at a disadvantage.
Marriage is not only a right that many people should have but it is also a lable at which many people want to have. A label establishing a focus on a couples commitment. A label that shows dedication and love that meets the grounds to foster a family. why would you take that away? I thought this was a family research council...

And the gay community is elated.

Granted this information may be mildly biased so the article includes commentary from the other side. And they're "elated"

First people have these "unwanted desires" because society points them as unhealthy evil pedophiles. People every day are brain washed to think that another culture, religion , race, gender, or orientation is below them or above them. The APA, and many other neo research organizations has shown through *makes a quote simble with fingures* research, that most people who hate their orientation are fighting themselves because of religion and society.
If society was more apt to acceptance than bent on redicule, homosexuals wouldnt have a problem with who they are.
"And despite what many gender researchers claim, research tells us that the absence of a father in the home is not, on balance, good for families."
lol researchers are proven false by research ...
oh and your research is out of date in comparison to what the APA and many other mental health / neo research organizations have. 2001 ( NARTH) 2006 (APA) 2008 (my psycology book)

So if I'm understanding correctly in regards to "'And despite what many gender researchers claim, research tells us that the absence of a father in the home is not, on balance, good for families.' " you said - "researchers are proven false by research"

Meaning you don't think a dad at home matters? I'm not sure I'm understanding your reply.

The first bit I think I do but due to the hour a proper response would be pretty unintelligible. Again I apologize but it's late and I have class tomorrow.
