An easy win for United over visitors West Ham enabled the team to keep pace with leaders Chelsea. Rooney got his first goal since March, in a 3-0 win that also saw goals from Berbatov and Nani. Sir Alex made only a few changes to the side that faced Fulham last week, bringing in Rooney for Hernandez, and starting Ryan Giggs for the first time this season, in place of Park. Fans always expect a home win for United, especially now since West Ham came with a record of no away wins since this time last season.
It was a slow start from the Reds, and their task was made no easier by the Hammers who took a defensive approach from the off. Despite all of the ball, it was difficult to find an opening. Paul Scholes and Dimitar Berbatov looked in particularly good form, with the former showing his usual range of astonishing passing, and the latter, his customary set of tricks. Nani came closest in the first half, set up by Berbatov with a lovely backward flick towards the Portuguese winger, who was unlucky to see his long-range effort hit the bar. On the rare occasion that West Ham did counter, Vidic and Evans were on top of their game to prevent anything from developing. The Serbian captain for the day in particular did brilliantly on one occasion to deny Carlton Cole with a goal-saving tackle.
After half an hour however, United got the goal they deserved. Ryan Giggs was brought down clumsily in the box by Spector, and the resultant penalty was duly converted by Wayne Rooney, who looked a relieved man to finally get a goal. This provided the basis for the remainder of the match, because many wondered that this might have turned out to be one of those games without a goal, despite all the possession in the world. Fletcher then came close with a drive from way out, but Rob Green did very well to prevent the scoreline from doubling. Just as half time dawned Nani had a great chance to make it two, when he was put through on goal by a wonderful pass from Giggs, but Nani’s attempted lob over Green went way over. Fortunately, United weren’t made to rue his miss this time round.
At the start of the second half, Nani more or less settled the issue of there being any sort of comeback from the point of view of West Ham. The winger made his way into the 18 yard box after a driving run, and dummying Gabbidon first time, lashed his shot into the net past a despairing Rob Green. A sensational goal from Nani, who had looked threatening all match.

The game ended as a contest on 69 minutes when Berbatov rounded-off a great individual performance with a deserved goal. O’Shea played in Nani with a little pass, and the winger clipped a perfectly-weighted ball to the far post, where Berbatov was on-hand to acrobatically volley home to make it 3-0. This certainly pleased United fans, who will be delighted at the fact that his link-up play is also being supplemented with goals.
It was an easy win for United in truth, and the team never really had to push too hard for the win. The first goal provided the basis for the team to score two more in the second half. Vidic was absolutely magnificent at the back, along with Evans, and really van der Sar had barely anything to do in goal throughout the game. Giggs and Scholes looked like 20-somethings (again) and ran the show with their passing and running at defenders. Berbatov was magnificent, as has been mentioned before. Rooney showed great determination to track back on a few instances, but he still hasn’t found his confidence and touch from last season, though it is hoped that his goal will act as a catalyst to his season. United don’t play again till the 11th of September — a shame too, as they seem to have hit some good form!
Best Moment: Rooney’s penalty
Worst Moment: Nothing really — Dyer’s effort against the post?
