Bellator-Strikeforce Dream Fight May Not Happen

| by

When Gilbert Melendez defeated Shinya Aoki on national television he called out another fighter he wanted a chance at, Eddie Alvarez. Immediately, Alvarez responded back online and agreed to the bout, one problem: Alvarez fights for Bellator and Melendez fights for Strikeforce.

So, then Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney started talking about setting up the fight and would meet and discuss the demands Strikeforce would have. Soon the fighters started talking to the media and addressing the questions about the fight making it seem it was just a matter of when, and then all the talk just disappeared.

Lately, the talk has resurfaced, this time in a war of words, between Rebney and Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker. Rebney has come out saying that he has tried everything he can do to make this fight happen, while Coker has stated that no talks had happened between the two promotions. Then, the texts came out showing Bjorn had reached out to Coker; claiming it was an old number, Coker went on to say this was not the way to go about business. Rebney agreed and gave Coker and ultimatum “Have your champ stop talking about the fight…or just sit down with me and let’s work it out.”

This fight gives Bellator a great opportunity to show off one of its biggest stars, for Strikeforce this could hurt them in what has been a disappointing year for their latest acquisitions. Strikeforce’s deal with M-1 Global has not gone as smoothly as they hoped it would have; their top heavyweight was submitted early in rd. 1, their top signing Dan Henderson lost to Jake Shields who then left for the UFC, and their up and coming heavyweight prospect Bobby Lashley was dominated by a guy who no one ever heard of.

This fight is a dream for some, and a nightmare for others. The only way this fight will take place is if either fighter joins the other’s promotion or they meet in the Octagon, either way it’ll be a while before this fight happens.
