Penn State Buys .XXX Domain Names

Embattled Penn State University is among the colleges and institutions that have purchased .xxx domain versions of their names.

Fox News reports that in September, Penn State bought .xxx domains of Penn State, PSU, Nittany Lions and The Pennsylvania State University.

Penn State spokesman Jeffrey Hermann said in an email to Fox:

"The cost was $200 per trademark, but this purchase should also prevent someone from buying a domain that includes our trademark along with other words. Our purchase of nittanylion.xxx is intended to prevent someone from purchasing a url such as nittanyliongirls."

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers approved the .xxx domain earlier this year. Companies and other organizations were given first crack at buying .xxx versions of their names before sales open to the general public on December 6.

Penn State made the purchase two months before the Jerry Sandusky sex scandal rocked the university.
