One Ohio couple say they were horrified to discover that a hacker had hijacked their baby monitor in the middle of night and only realized it when they woke up to a man screaming, “Wake up baby!”
Adam and Heather Schreck of Cincinnati say they were woken up by what they thought was a man’s voice in the middle of the night. Heather turned on her cell phone to look at the baby monitor’s feed and noticed that the camera, which is attached to 10-month-old Emma’s crib, was moving erratically, and immediately, she heard the hacker’s voice.
“About the time I saw it moving, I also heard a voice again start screaming at my daughter,” said Heather Schreck to Fox 19. “He was screaming, ‘Wake up baby! Wake up baby!’ Then just screaming at her trying to wake her up.”
Adam Schreck says he then ran into his daughter’s room to protect her and saw the camera turn right towards him. The man on the other end start cursing at the protective father, so he quickly unplugged the camera. After the ordeal, Schreck realized that their high tech Foscam IP Camera had been hacked into.
“It's not just that they want to get in and mess with your camera,” said Dave Hatter of Infinity Partners. “Sophisticated hackers know they can use this as a launching-off point to get into your network and potentially steal your ID or launch malicious attacks.” Hatter advises people to change their camera and Wi-Fi passwords if they believe that their technology has been compromised.
"You do kind of feel violated in a way," said Adam.
The couple says they’ve now upgraded their monitor system and have changed their passwords in the hopes that something like this won’t happen again.
