'Play And Do Not Be Gay': Homophobic Game Removed From App Store By Google After Twitter Campaign

| by Dominic Kelly

Google is coming under fire for allowing a game in the Android store that involves users killing gay people for fun.

The game, which has been around for some time on other platforms, became available for download on Android phones in early November. Reports say that “Ass Hunters” had been downloaded over 10,000 times before Google recently removed it from the marketplace.

The description of the game reads, “Popular game hunting on gays is now on android! Play and do not be gay! Legendary game, where you are hunter and your mission is to kill gays as much as you can or escape between them to the next level. Gays may be hidden in bushes and unexpectedly catch you. Remember! When they catch you they will do with you whatever they want.”

Once word of the game’s availability on the Android marketplace spread, a Twitter campaign was launced to get Google to remove it. Finally, the company decided to take the offensive game down, although it is still available on other platforms, seeing as it has reportedly been around since 2006.

“This developer is despicable. I cannot comprehend how someone could create a 'game' so wilfully ignorant, hateful, vile and violent,” said commenter Marcus Hamilton, according to Metro UK, prior to the game being deleted from Android. “Do you realize that young gay men and women are attacked all the time, and your game could be the incentive for someone to act on their ignorance? Normalizing violence is never okay. By creating and publishing this 'game,' you're sending the message that you condone such violence. Shame. Shame on you. I will not rest until your developer account is deleted and you are laughed into obscurity.”

Google says that the game has definitely been removed from the app store, but they don’t appear to have commented any further on the matter.
