NASA Says Mars Curiosity Rover Made Major Discovery on Mars

| by Michael Allen

The Mars Curiosity rover has reportedly made a major discovery on Mars, which NASA plans to announce soon.

The discovery was made by the rover's Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM), which is an on-board chemistry lab, reports the Daily Mail.

SAM [image on right] samples Martian rock, soil and air. It is able to identify organic compounds that could indicate life.

John Grotzinger, chief scientist of the Curiosity team, told NPR: "This data is gonna be one for the history books. It's looking really good."

Grotzinger told SPACE.com that the findings will be revealed at the meeting of the American Geophysical Union, which begins on December 3 in San Francisco, California.

The Curiosity team reportedly needs time to double-check the findings.
