iPhone 5 Mini is Rumored to be Made of Plastic

Apple is attempting to increase its ability to compete in the smartphone market by developing a low cost iPhone 5.

According to rumors, the phone will cost less than $250 and will include most of the features of the iPhone 5, but will be made of plastic.

Other rumors indicate that Apple is creating three smartphones, the "iPhone Math," a 4-inch iPhone 5S and an iPhone 6.

Though not much is known about the iPhones, Apple has purchased Authentec, a company that makes advanced fingerprinting technology. At least one of the phones will include a security feature requiring fingerprints.

The biggest difference between the iPhone 5 and its low budget counterpart is that the body is made of plastic.

CNET explains:

“Like the current iPhone, the low-cost version would sport a 4-inch 1,136×640 pixel Retina Display and use the new Lightning interface. The sensor, camera, and button arrangement would all match those found on the iPhone 5. The screen itself would stick with Gorilla Glass, say iLounge’s sources, but the body would be made of plastic.

“The bottom of the phone would take its design from the iPod Touch. Like the Touch, the volume buttons would adopt an elongated pill shape instead of the more circular design from the last few iPhones. The back of the phone would be home to the camera, microphone, and rear flash with the same layout as that on the latest iPod Touch.”

Jeremy Horwitz, Editor-in-Chief of iLounge says the phone will be different mostly because of its materials and lack of curves:

“No, it won’t just be a Retina-and Lightning-equipped refresh of the iPhone 3G or 3GS, Apple’s last plastic iPhones, nor will it look just like an all-plastic version of the iPhone 5This new model is actually a cross between the iPhone 5, fifth-generation iPod touch, and… wait for it… the iPod classic. Yes, really. It will have a 4 screen, like the iPhone 5, a bottom like the latest iPod touch, and a shape that’s most similar to the iPod classic.”
