Though the app will at first only consist of the main BBM components, it will later grow to have other aspects of the system.

As of now, the app features BBM chats, multi-person chats, voice note sharing and BlackBery Groups with message and file sharing between 30 members.

BlackBerry CEO Throsten Heins said, "We'll bring voice, screen share, and of course, channels, later on."

It will be compatible with iOS 6, Android 4.0 and all later versions.

BlackBerry's messaging platform has been an integral part of the company for years. Many believe the spread of BBM across multiple devices signifies the company's move towards focusing on software-only development.

Andrew Bocking, executive vice president of software product management and ecosystem at BlackBerry, said, "For BlackBerry, messaging and collaboration are inseparable from the mobile experience, and the time is definitely right for BBM to become a multi-platform mobile service."

BBM currently has more than 60 million monthly users. More than 51 million of them engage with BBM for an average of 90 minutes per day. The service sends 10 billion messages a day.

The ability to BBM across platforms may entice many BlackBerry users to stick with their phones and hopefully try out BB10.
